Dear Reader:
The first time one of my sons took a hit during a hockey game, I learned that it really is physically possible for your heart to lodge in your throat. There I was, on the other side of the boards, watching and wondering what to do: Run out on the ice, or wait? Thankfully I never had to decide; in less than a very long minute, he was back on his feet and speeding down the ice after the puck.
I had to make a hard admission that day: I could be just as overprotective as my mother was (okay, so she still is!). But how far is too far? It's a question that every parent asks themselves at one time or another, and there's not always an easy answer. Sometimes you struggle to let go while you struggle to hold on, and hope that the battle gets easier down the road.
And sometimes...well, sometimes you actually learn something from the least likely source!
